Personal profile

Overview

I am currently on a NIHR funded post-doctoral fellowship from the Clinical Academics Training Scheme at the School of Health Sciences at the University of Manchester. My fellowship supports research and training.  This is a joint position as a clinical academic in dietetics at Salford Royal Foundation Trust.

The role involves 2.5 days a week leading a number of research projects and 2.5 days per week as a dietitian at Salford Royal Infirmary, leading service development projects in the nutritional management of people on home parenteral nutrition and also undertaking some clinical work in dietetics. Clinical work is in the area of gastroenterology.

My research involves a series of projects investigating integrating nutrition into the care pathway for colorectal cancer patients in survivorship. This has involved running some discrete choice experiments and now developing an intervention for patients who have survived colorectal cancer.  A Cochrane review has been registered and is currently underway in nutrition in cancer survivorship. This builds upon my previous work in nutrition and cancer that has shown that oral supplements are beneficial at reducing complications in people with colorectal cancer who have lost weight prior to surgery.  Research on integrating nutrition screening into an enhanced recovery programme and the development of a nutritional care plan was also undertaken and was implemented in three hospital sites involving 20, 000 patients. This was used as an example of research impact in the 2014 research assessment exercise.

My clinical role as a Dietitian SRFT has involved project managing a series of studies that has looked at evaluating care for people who are receiving home parenteral nutrition. This has included three research projects looking at quality of life for patients on home parenteral nutrition and developing a patient recorded outcome measure. Whilst at SRFT I have also been involved in evaluating service developments in parenteral nutrition and also clinically in managing patients with gastrointestinal conditions.  This work has involved developing a patient reported outcome measure for people with short bowel syndrome on parenteral nutrition and some exploratory work to evaluate the potential for new technological developments in service innovations on the intestinal failure unit.
