Personal profile

Biography

Professor Steve Yeates has over 20 years industrial experience working for ICI, Zeneca and Avecia Ltd in the area of specialty polymer chemistry. During that time he held a number of senior technical positions developing and implementing research strategy. Over the last 7 years in industry he developed a particular interest in organic semiconductors and inkjet printing for both industrial and SOHO applications.

In November 2004 he was appointed to the full time academic position as Professor of Polymer Chemistry, and co-Director within the Organic Materials Innovation Centre (OMIC) at the University of Manchester, the UK?s second largest chemistry department. His current areas of research are supported by EPSRC, DTI, Home Office, EU, and active industrial collaboration.

Research interests

My research concerns the synthesis, characterization of polymers and crosses the boundaries of physical and organic chemistry. Particular interests and active programme include:

  • Synthesis and solution processing of novel oligo and polyacene organic semiconductors.
  • Fundamental studies on associating polymers under high shear process; e.g inkjet printing.
  • Assembly of topologically and structurally complex 2.5 and 3D functional materials by inkjet micro-deposition.
  • Bottom up assembly and stabilisation of organic, metallic and hybrid nano-particulates.
  • Synthesis and characterisation of functional aqueous polymers for coatings applications.
  • Functional polymer supports for selective metal recovery.
  • Synthesis and solution characterisation of polyethylene oxide block copolymers.
