Biography

Stuart Turley is an Emeritus Professor Accounting at the University of Manchester. He held a chair in Accounting from 1994 and retired from primary academic activities in October 2020. He has held visiting appointments in Sweden, Denmark and Australia. Between 2002 and 2012 he was a member of the Auditing Practices Board (within the Financial reporting Council), which set practice and ethical standards for auditors in the UK and Ireland. He has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Auditing Research Network since its inception, serves on the editorial boards of several journals, and was formerly a member of the Research Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, 

Professor Turley has held senior roles in university mamagement, as Head of the Manchester School of Accounting and Finance (now part of Alliance Manchester Business School), between 1997 and 2001, and Associate Dean for Postgraduate Taught Programmes in the Faculty of Humanities, between 2004 and 2008. He is a past editor of the British Accounting Review and the International Journal of Auditing.

  • Audit Methodology - the way in which methodologies applied by major firms have developed and evolved over time and how these developments have been reflected in practice standards.
  • Developments in the scope of auditing and assurance, including, for example, big-data analytics and sustainability assurance.
  • Internationalisation, the auditing profession and the development of audit regulation internationally.
  • Regulation of accounting and auditing, including as[ects such as the role of regulatory impact assessment and the development of systems of oversight and inspection of practice.
  • Ethics, auditor independence and non-audit services.
  • Audit committees and their contribution to corporate governance.

Teaching

Professor Turley taught a wide range of courses at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate education. Principally these were in the areas of Financial Reporting, Financial Accounting Theory, Auditing and related aspects of corporate governance.

Doctoral supervision: Over fifteen students supervised to successful completion of their doctorate. Recent supervision includes research projects on topics concerning: sustainability assurance; big-data analytics in auditing; professional conceptions of audit quality; the impact of audit committees; the development of corporate governance codes of conduct; business risk auditing; non audit services and ethical standards; and international accounting harmonisation.
