Additional Information

Sue is the Programme Director for Postgraduate Certificate in Education Studies at master’s level. This complements School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programmes run by external institutions. Successful completiong of both, leads to a PGCE qualification. She is the Course Unit Director for Leadership of Learning - with Teaching Placement, University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL) course units for undergraduates considering a career in teaching. Alongside these management and teaching roles, Sue is the Project Lead for the Coalition of Research Schools, which includes the Trafford Teaching School Alliance Research Network. This is a partnership between schools and the University using collaborative enquiry as a mechanism for developing schools from within.

Since joining Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), Sue has developed strong partnerships with teachers and schools through her development of teacher-led research networks.  She was the research manager for a European Project ‘Responding to Diversity by Engaging Student Voices’, involving teachers, academics and pupils from Spain, Portugal and England over three years.  From this, a guide for teachers on how to use pupil voice as part of teacher development, written by the participants, was published in three languages, as well as a number of academic papers. For five years, Sue also developed a district research network with a focus on equity across a group of high schools. This led to a number of publications, including the book ‘Developing Equitable Education Systems’.  This was highly commended by the Society for Educational Studies in 2013.  This project led to the development of the Coalition of Research Schools run across groups of schools in Greater Manchester. She continues to run this.

For five years, Sue was also involved in the design and teaching of the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL), aimed at early career teachers in Greater Manchester. Her focus was on the Reflective Practice, Inclusion and Enquiry Based Practice course units.

Prior to this, Sue developed and researched the use of e-learning to support distance learning, before virtual learning environments were widespread.  This led to her involvement in the e-China-UK Project, where she collaborated closely with colleagues at the University of Manchester and Universities across China to create online masters’ programmes for teachers.  This led to a number of publications.

Before joining the University, Sue worked for 16 years in secondary and post-compulsory education, as a teacher, manager and teacher developer, in Geography, English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and academic communication skills.
