I took my degree in English and Spanish at the University of Valladolid (Spain, 1992), where I started teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. Two years later I completed the PGCE (Certificado de Aptitud Pedagógica) through the same institution and in 1997 I started a PhD on Contemporary Female-Authored Spanish Drama, which I successfully completed in 2001. I was an Associate Lecturer for the Open University from 2003 to 2015, and since September 2002 I have been teaching in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Manchester, where I also coordinate the Spanish language. I teach Spanish grammar and integrated skills, business Spanish and translation. In the past I was course co-convenor for ‘The Rise of Theatre’ (SPAN3410) and participated in the delivery of lectures and tutorials on modern and contemporary Spanish theatre for various courses.
My PhD focused on contemporary Spanish drama with special emphasis on alternative theatre, women playwrights and issues on gender and language. I am also active in researching on intercultural pedagogy, kinetic manifestations, theatre and dramatic forms in the teaching of Spanish as a FL, enquiry-based learning (EBL) and interdisciplinarity.
Since 1998, I have regularly presented my research on contemporary Spanish theater and language at diverse fora such as the association of Women in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (WISPS), the British Educational Research Association Conference (BERA), the Higher Education Academy, the Instituto Cervantes, the Association for the Teaching of Spanish as a FL (ASELE), etc.
