Research interests

Research Interests

My research has focused on the imbalance of power between the global North and global South in relation to the development of more equitable education opportunities for the most marginalised groups of children, and for disabled children in particular. What is distinctive about this work is that it has been possible to capture evidence of innovative inclusive practices in some of the economically poorest countries in the world. Through my work with the Enabling Education Network (EENET) (established in 1997 to promote the inclusion of marginalised groups in education worldwide) I developed an inclusive approach to networking as a way of challenging power relations and in order to support the co-production of community based knowledge in Southern countries. Image-based research methods, and photography, in particular, have been central to my work.

Teaching

My teaching has focused on equity, diversity and inclusion in education, primarily in developing country contexts. I co-led the Being a Leader course, 2021-2024, for both university staff and PGRs, and continue to integrate aspects of the course in ongoing guest lecturing on a range of courses in the Manchester Institute of Education. In 2025 I co-led 'Discovering your academic voice' workshops with PGRs, which focus on the development of clear, effective and accessible presentations.

I have supervised PhD students in the areas of refugee education, higher education policy and inclusive education. I am no longer accepting new students.
