Overview
I am an experienced statistician and applied health researcher who combines leadership in research, teaching, and methodological development. My academic career is characterised by a strong focus on the statistical evaluation of interventions and care pathways aimed at improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities.
Healthcare decisions increasingly depend on complex evidence from trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews. Weaknesses in study design or analysis can lead to ineffective or inequitable care. My research addresses this challenge through the application of rigorous methods for evaluating healthcare interventions, diagnostic tests, and care pathways, reducing bias and uncertainty in the evidence base. This work has made a direct difference by informing national and international clinical guidelines and public health policy, supporting more effective prevention, treatment, and service delivery.
Research interests
My research is centred on the quantitative evaluation of healthcare interventions, with interests spanning:
- Randomised controlled trials, including pragmatic and cluster‑randomised designs in oral health
- Evaluation of population-based non‑randomised studies of interventions to improve the management of diseases and health service delivery
- Evidence synthesis of intervention, diagnostic test acuracy and prognostic studies
