Dr. Tatiana M. Martinez is Assistant Professor at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. She holds a PhD in Information Systems and a MSc in Comparative Politics (Democracy), both of which she completed at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Tatiana also holds a BA in Business Administration and Marketing, completed at Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Tatiana’s research has centred on the use of transparency and open data by public institutions in order to enhance levels of accountability, curb corruption, and facilitate greater civic participation. She has also focused her research on the cognitive aspects of technology deployment and unethical decision-making by government officials and leaders, utilising a theoretical framework which combines distributed cognition and moral disengagement. Her most recent publication, titled "Open data as an anticorruption tool? Using distributed cognition to understand breakdowns in the creation of transparency data", centres on the limits of open data as a form of combatting corruption, the results of which were presented at the World Bank. Her PhD thesis, which adopts a framework which combines distributed cognition and moral disengagement, applied to the case of a Brazilian Federal Agency, can be accessed here.
Currently, Tatiana is concentrating efforts on expanding on previous research, and is focusing on technology investments made by Local Authories in England (results soon to be published) and on the use of AI as an anticorruption tool in Brazil.
Tatiana has extensive teaching experience, having taught at the LSE, and acted as Assistant Professor at Regent's University London. Whilst at Regent's, in addition to teaching, Tatiana was also Programme Director for the BSc Business, Technology and Entrepreneurship, a programme she co-designed (along with the new MSc Managing Digital Disruption and Transformation, and new course units such as Artificial Intelligence for Business, Level 7, and Technology Bootcamp, Level 4).
Tatiana has been active in organising events and leading initiatives, such as panels and symposia with renowned academics and government ministers. For her achievements, she has received a number of academic and professional awards and honours throughout her career.
Prior to entering into academia, Tatiana spent several years working for global corporations in the technology/telecommunications field, such as Cisco Systems and Verizon, in a consultative capacity, driving business and advising on technology investments in different countries (United States, Netherlands, and Brazil).
