Overview

Thomas Flavel is an interdisciplinary researcher whose work spans media and communications, sociology, and computer science. He is a Research Associate at the University of Manchester, based at the Creative Manchester research platform, where his current work focuses on strengthening collaboration between academic departments and the University’s cultural institutions, and on developing automated methods for analysing television produced by UK public-service broadcasters. He previously worked at the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research on a project examining threats to representative democracy arising from digital media. He holds a DPhil in Information, Communication and the Social Sciences from the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, where his doctoral research examined how cosmopolitan orientations and practices of internet censorship circumvention shape the social organisation, culture, and politics of Chinese youth.
