After graduating in History and working as a school teacher in Turkey and Nigeria, Tim Jacoby won an Economic and Social Research Council scholarship for a MA in International Conflict Analysis at the University of Kent. From 1999 to 2003, he then completed his PhD (funded by a departmental scholarship) and an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Politics at the University of York. He joined the Global Development Institute at the University of Manchester in 2003 where he is now Professor. In 2009, he co-founded the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute at the University of Manchester.
Tim Jacoby’s research initially focussed on state development in Turkey, but a particular interest in issues of minority identity and politics there has led him to study broader topics related to political violence, civil society, Islam, nationalism and post-conflict reconstruction. He has published more than 25 articles in international journals and acted as guest editor for Disasters, International Studies Review, Middle East Critique, Progress in Development Studies, Peace Review and the Journal of Peasant Studies. He is also author of Social Power and the Turkish State (Frank Cass, 2004), Understanding Conflict & Violence: Interdisciplinary and Theoretical Approaches (Routledge, 2007) and The Military-Humanitarian Complex in Afghanistan (with Eric James, Palgrave, 2016). With Alpaslan Özerdem, he is co-author of Disaster Management and Civil Society: Earthquake Relief in Japan, Turkey and India (I.B. Tauris, 2005) and Peace in Turkey 2023: The Question of Human Security and Conflict Transformation, (Lexington, 2012).
