Personal profile

Overview

Toby Wright is a ESPRC research fellow working at the Univeristy of Manchester.

Biography

Toby Wright obtained his MPhys degree from the University of Shefield in 2010 and completed his PhD titled High accuracy measurement of the 238U(n,γ) cross section at the CERN n_TOF facility in 2014 at the University of Manchester. He continued his research with the neutron time-of-flight facility as a PDRA based at CERN before being awarded an EPSRC energy post doctoral research fellowship in 2016. He subsequently became the manager of the UK Nuclear Data Network in 2019, an STFC funded network+. He was awarded an EPSRC fellowship in 2022 titled Nuclear Data Measurements for Advanced Nuclear Technologies.

Research interests

His research interests are in the measurment of nuclear data quantities of importance to nuclear technologies. Typically, these are measurements of cross sections of neutron induced reactions such as capture, fission and elastic and inelastic scattering. These are performed at international neutron facilties such as the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN, the high-flux research reactor at ILL, Grenoble and the NPL van de graff accelerator, London.

Teaching

He was a visiting lecturer at the University of Chester from 2020-2022 and taught their nuclear technologies module. He has the current course leader on PHYS30121 Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics and has previously lectured on PHYS40322 Nuclear Physics and PHYS40422 Applied Nuclear Physics. He runs the laboratory and space batteries exersise on PHYS65030 Radiation & Radiological Protection.

He has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students on masters and PhD projects.
