Overview

Dr. Tommy (Kam Ho) Chan is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Management Science and Programme Director for the MSc Business Analytics: Operational Research and Risk Analysis at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), The University of Manchester. As a behavioural information systems researcher, Tommy’s work focuses on understanding user behaviours in information system use and their broader societal implications, with a particular emphasis on social responsibility.

Tommy currently leads three research programmes addressing societal challenges related to technology use: (1) Responsible Technology Use: This programme explores IT-based interventions to enhance awareness and responsibility. (2) Digital Self and Well-being: This programme focuses on vulnerable and minority groups, examining how online health communities support individuals with concealable stigmatised identities to enhance their well-being. (3) Social Media-fuelled Conflicts: This programme investigates ideological conflicts intensified by social media.

Key papers authored by Tommy have been published in top-tier journals, including Information Systems Research (UTD24, FT50, AJG4*), Journal of the Association for Information Systems (AJG4*), Journal of Management Information Systems (FT50, AJG4), Information Systems Journal (AJG4), and Information & Management (AJG3).

His research has garnered over 4,100 citations on Google Scholar, achieved a field-weighted citation impact of 3.25 on Scopus, and attained an overall citation percentile median of 96th in Web of Science. In 2024, Tommy was recognised as a Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientist.

Tommy also contributes to the information systems discipline through editorial roles with the Information Systems Journal and Internet Research and as a Track Co-chair for Association for Information Systems (AIS) conferences. He co-convenes a cross-institutional research support group to foster an inclusive research culture, enabling junior researchers to collaborate and publish.

His commitment to the discipline has been recognised with awards such as the Best Reviewer Awards (2017, 2020), the Outstanding Track Chair Award (2021), the Best Conference Associate Editor Award (2022), the AIS Early Career Award (2022), and the AIS Doctoral Student College Faculty Mentor Award (2024).

Within the university, Tommy integrates his research expertise and consultancy experience into learning and teaching activities. His teaching has been consistently rated highly across various programmes and student cohorts. Tommy teaches a wide range of courses at different levels, including management information systems, system design and analysis, digital strategy, e-marketing, marketing analytics, change management, and project management.

Tommy has also served as a member of several committees, including the Academic Resource and Planning Team, the Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee, the AACSB Assurance of Learning Committee, and the Race Equality Charter Self-Assessment Team, contributing significantly to divisional, faculty, and university-wide initiatives.
