Biography
Tonny is a Lecturer in Innovation and Sustainable Business at the Alliance Manchester Business School, with affiliations to the Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) and the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR). He holds a DPhil in Geography and the Environment from the University of Oxford.
His research lies at the intersection of sustainable energy transitions and innovation studies, mainly focusing on developing regions. Dr. Kukeera's work is anchored in three interconnected themes:
First, he investigates pathways for delivering affordable clean energy in low-income countries, examining how innovative business models and enabling policies can accelerate renewable energy adoption. Second, his research explores the role of entrepreneurship in sustainability transitions, specifically analysing how business model innovation can drive the uptake of low-carbon technology solutions in emerging markets. Third, he studies climate adaptation entrepreneurship, examining why and how entrepreneurs develop innovative solutions in agri-tech, electromobility, and other climate-responsive ventures and how they can be supported.
Underpinning this research is a systems thinking approach that helps unravel the complex challenges associated with energy transitions and sustainable development. Through this multifaceted lens, Tonny’s work aims to advance theoretical understanding and practical solutions for promoting sustainable energy access and low-carbon economic growth in developing regions.
