Patient Safety and Hospital Discharge

Victoria's research examines the legal and regulatory frameworks governing patient safety, with a particular focus on hospital discharges. Her PhD, funded by the NIHR, critically examined regulatory responses to patient safety incidents arising at the point of discharge - a juncture she identifies as underexamined in law and policy. This work spans questions of regulatory accountability, risk, and justice, and has been published in Medical Law Review, Medical Law International, and the Journal of Professional Negligence.

She recently completed a BA/Leverhulme-funded project exploring legal and experiential perceptions of 'loss of chance' following critical care, bringing together law, patient experience, and questions of rehabilitation and redress.

Regulation of Emerging Health Technologies

Victoria has also contributed to debates on the regulation of patient-led health technologies. As part of a collaborative project with the University of Birmingham, she investigated the legal and regulatory implications of DIY artificial pancreas systems -open-source devices created and used by patients with diabetes outside formal regulatory approval. This work raised questions of clinician liability, medical device regulation, and patient safety, resulting in publications in Medical Law International and Diabetic Medicine.

Before joining academia, Victoria worked in policy at the General Medical Council. She welcomes PhD applications in healthcare law and regulation. 

Teaching 

Victoria teaches on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in (healthcare) law and ethics, including Tort Law, Principles of Law, Medicine and Ethics for undergraduates and a variety of healthcare law and ethics courses for Masters students in both campus-based and distance learning formats. She has previously served as Programme Director for the Healthcare Ethics and Law campus-based programme and as Course Director for Global Health Law and Bioethics.
