Overview

Wajira Mirihanage is a Senior Lecturer in Materials Science/Diamond-Manchester Fellow. His research focuses on the evolution of solidification microstructures in materials, with a strong emphasis on understanding and controlling structure–property relationships. A major area of his work is the additive manufacturing of metallic alloys, alongside studies in solidification and welding processes. His key scientific interests include the role of fluid flow in microstructure formation, dynamic phase transformations, and strategies for microstructure control during materials processing.

His research has increasingly expanded into the use of artificial intelligence and data-driven approaches for process design in metal additive manufacturing, including in situ image processing. Wajira also explores materials behaviour/processing under extreme environments, particularly microgravity and space conditions, aiming to understand materials behaviour and enable future space-based manufacturing. In addition to metals, his recent work includes the additive manufacturing of polymers and polymer composites, with applications spanning sustainable materials.

Wajira’s research makes extensive use of advanced characterisation techniques, including fast time-resolved synchrotron X-ray studies and in situ electron microscopy. These experimental approaches are complemented by computational methods, including machine learning and numerical modelling, to extract, interpret, and predict complex material behaviour from large-scale datasets.
