My group utilizes the basic principles in chemistry, material sciences, textiles and fashion, to enable novel applications and development of flexible, stretchable electronics, energy devices and functional fashion.
1. Smart textile and wearable electronics; fibre based sensors and energy storage;
2. Functional Fashion, including waterproof, UV blocking, self-heating, moisture management, thermal regulation, and antibacterial fabrics;
3. 2D materials and functional nanomaterials;
4. Tribology in textile: hand feeling of garments; textiles reinforced polymer composite lubricants;
5. Sustainable development in the textile industry: waste textiles/garments regeneration, and natural dye.
Design Beautiful and Useful garments, to make people's life Better.
I am in the following research themes groups in the School of Materials.
Currently, there are 14 PhD students, 3 Msc students and 3 UG students in my groups.
PhD study opportunities in the following topics:
Textile Bioengineering and Science,
Nano functional textile materials;
Fibre surface modification;
Smart materials and wearable intelligent textiles.
Dr Xuqing LIU is an Tenured Research Fellow in Textile Bioengineering and Science and serves as the Chair of Student Staff Liaison Committee of Postgraduate Taught (DoM). Dr Liu obtained his BS in Chemistry at the Lanzhou University, China, then he joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences to start his research in developing new synthetic lubricates and tribology chemistry. In 2011, he moved to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a PhD student, studying smart textiles and functional fabrics. During 2013-2014, he was a visiting PhD student at the University of Manchester. Completing his doctorate in 2015, Dr Liu joined the University of Manchester as an independent Research Fellow and Group leader, where he investigates Fibre Surface Molecular Engineering.
Dr Liu is the Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry(FRSC), Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts(FRSA), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy(FHEA). He is a member of Future Fashion Factory, a member of Future Fashion Factory, a member of The Textile Institute, and a Professional Member of IOM3 (MIMMM).
He is serving on the Editorial Boards of Advanced Fiber Materials, SmartMat, Energy & Environmental Materials. He is the Chairman of the Chinese Textile and Apparel Society(CTAS-UK).
More than 90 research papers have been published in high-quality journals, such as Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Nano Letters, Small, and ACS Nano.
