Accepting PhD Students
Zhaokun Xin started teaching at the University of Manchester in early 2023. Prior to his return to the UK, he had pursued his studies in Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, and Tempe, and worked at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. His research is rooted in late imperial Chinese literature, drawing on the interdisciplinary fields of affect and gender studies, ritual theory, and medical humanities. His current project focuses on so-called "negative" feelings as alternative entry points to explore anew the emotional landscape in Ming-Qing literature. He is also broadly interested in translation studies and Sino-Japanese cultural interactions.
Zhaokun is experienced in teaching various facets of Chinese literature and culture, having offered survey courses and thematic units on fantasy, gender, and emotional, visual, as well as theatrical cultures in China and East Asia. He has also taught both introductory and advanced classical Chinese. Innotative teaching technology, multimedia storytelling, and immersive learning experience stand out as three most prominent facets of his classes.
Zhaokun welcomes doctoral projects on late imperial Chinese literature and culture, and looks forward to roaming the fascinating literary worlds of Ming-Qing China with prospective researchers together.
