Flexible Learning Pilot 'Enhancing student experience through flexible learning'

Project Details

Description

This project involves the incorporation of problem-oriented project learning (PPL) with viva voce summative assessments as the pedagogical model for seminars discussions and group presentations in postgraduate course units GEOG60982: Space and Sustainability and EDUC70252 Social Justice in Education.
Currently, both units have summative assessments that include spoken activities (EDUC70252 has a group presentation and GEOG60982 has a group presentation). Whilst these have been successful modes of assessment in terms of evidencing ILOs, they are traditionally built on orally presenting pre-prepared and curated research to student peers with written feedback and grading provided by the course unit leads. The pilot intends for academic leads to change their pedagogic practices in the seminar sessions to include more preparatory oral interactions as formative opportunities for a final ‘group presentation’. These activities, including the final summative assessment, will be informed and shaped by principles of PPL, developed by Roskilde University, Copenhagen, Denmark. Therefore, seminars will include scaffolded and tailored student tasks based on a number of Roskilde’s PPL principles that will develop the oral competences for both native and non-native speakers alongside critical thinking skills throughout the unit. The pilot will evaluate the impact of the approach on staff workload, the quality of student work and their satisfaction, including gauging the affective impact of the assessment process, and how well the approach might transfer to other courses.
