The Newman Archive Digitisation Project documents the large-scale digitisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman’s personal papers, held at the Birmingham Oratory and the John Rylands Library. Running from 2013 to 2016, the project digitised an extraordinary collection of over 230,000 images drawn from 238 archival boxes. Materials include letters, manuscripts, notebooks, photographs, albums, printed ephemera, and other personal documents that chart Newman’s life, correspondence, and intellectual influence.
The project was a collaborative effort between CHICC, the Birmingham Oratory, and the National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS). Each institution brings unique expertise and perspective, contributing to a shared vision of open access and long-term preservation. Regular updates, insights, and behind-the-scenes stories from all three partners will be shared through the dedicated project blog, offering a transparent and engaging view into the digitisation journey.
The initiative ensured the preservation and accessibility of this significant nineteenth-century collection, providing researchers and the public with digital access to Newman’s works and correspondence for the first time.
