Abstract

In the field of ritual research, authors from various disciplines have recently devoted themselves in different ways to observing how rituals activate the senses and how the senses can function as a guarantee of meaning in ritual. In this way, various approaches to the aesthetics of the material and sensual reality of religious practices and rituals have been developed. The methodological-theoretical prerequisites and the added value of an operationalization of the research topic aesthetics in ritual studies will be presented and dictated in the following, above all from the perspective of religious studies.
