Abstract
Missionaries, acting against the truth that Latin was the principal medical language, substituted English for Latin in teaching Chinese students. Some Chinese who had studied in Japan resisted missionaries’ effort to make Chinese subordinate to its Western counterparts. The present paper delineates how they boycotted the terminologies coined by China Medical Missionary Association in a 1910 conference, meanwhile revealing that this resistance was a nationalist endeavor to save the losing Chinese tradition in the hegemony of imperialistic discourse
