Abstract

Traditionally, the topic of physicians locates at the center of the history of medicine. This article, however, takes Li-Fu Chen (1900-2001), a mining engineer trained in the U.S., and his achievements as examples to underscore that Chen's systemic infrastructures of the industry-government-university on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) profoundly contributed to the development of TCM in Taiwan after the Second World War. By analyzing the oublished documents and interview records, this article argues that the role of Li-Fu Chen played in the development of TCM in Taiwan was not only a proponent, having continued the advocacies of "saving Nation through science" and "scientizing Chinese medicine" in China since the early 20th century; Chen's role was also an engineer, constructing infrastructures for developing TCM in Taiwan.

This article first introduces Li-Fu Chen's dedication to the National Government, the Institute of National Medicine, and the education of saving China in the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949). The second part indicates that Chen zealously intertwined TCM, science, and Confucianism during Taiwan's Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement (1966-1991). Finally, this article focuses on Chen's all-out efforts to develop TCM infrastructures in Taiwan, including TCM's higher education, medical institutions, academic research, and textbook publications.
