Abstract
This article focuses on how the heroine Chu Xuanji who used to be an “incomplete” individual since the lack of “hun-po”, grew up to a “complete” subject through a series of adventures in the Chinese web series Liuli in 2020. The subject formation of Xuanji comes as our core concern. First, we employ two strands of theoretical sources from Euro-American new materialism and the Chinese pre-modern hun-po philosophy and explore non-binary, fluid and organic body politics. We carefully examine how hun, po and the corporeal are organically constituted as a post-human body. Second, we further discuss the dynamic relationships between the body and the mind, the material and the discursive through examination of the body and the spirit of the female protagonist Xuanji, and her inserted azure-stone-made heart(xin). Consequently, we regard Xuanji as a quasi-human subject with agency. Through a close reading of the Liuli web drama, we endeavour to rethink materiality and the (post)human subject in fusion with technology and contribute to the fluidity of posthuman knowledge.
