Abstract

This paper draws on data from Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) 2010-2015 and uses the diagonal reference modelling (DRM) method to analyze the impacts of intergenerational social mobility on women’s gender-role attitudes in contemporary Chinese society. Our findings show clear mobility trajectory effects on women’s gender-role attitudes. Women who have experienced intergenerational upward mobility, especially those of a long-range kind, tend to hold less traditional gender-role attitudes than their counterparts with downward mobility experiences. This finding suggests that promoting upward mobility is conducive to engendering a more equal gender ideology, making for greater social progress.
