Abstract

Research Excellence Framework(REF) was newly adopted in 2014 to assess research performance of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK during the period 2008–2013.The evaluation methods used were updated with 36 disciplinary Unit of Assessment (UoA) and three evaluative dimensions (Output 65%, Impact 20%, Environment 15%). Although research quality was still concentrated on, impact beyond academia (economy, society, culture, public policy or services et al,) gets massively increasing attention. The evaluation results of the first REF, announced in December 2014 at the disciplinary level, demonstrate the high quality and enhanced international standing of research conducted in UK HEIs, in terms of excellence, diversity and impact. In addition, REF reflects the changing value of research evaluation policy in the UK aiming to maintain and improve the achievements of the HEIs, in terms of undertaking high-quality research, achieving demonstrable benefits to the wider economy and society, and building sustainable capacities.
