    Abstract

In this paper the stand alone production of biodiesel and green diesel are analyzed along with integrated biorefinery systems exploiting the whole Jatropha fruit in a holistic manner.Alternatives were evaluated in terms of energy and of greenhouse emissions savings. It was found that bioenergy production from integrated utilization of Jatropha by-products can enhance the life cycle performance of biorefinery systems. The integrated biorefinery wherein either biodiesel or green diesel production is accompanied by husk conversion for utility supply, cake combustion for heating requirements and production of excess power using biogas from anaerobic digestion of fruit shells and glycerol was the best option according to the sustainability criteria employed.
