Abstract
Starting with an unusual portrayal of the well-known epic heroine, Sita, in a text called Adbhuta-Ramayana, we demonstrate how such a case study can prompt pupils to ask critical questions to move them beyond their initial confusion. We tease out for teachers the value of pupils enquiring about social location, multiple layers of meaning, different theological views and wider constructions of 'religion' as a preparation for university study. The article is supported by further material on the TAROSA website (Teaching Across Religions of South Asia: http://tarosaproject.wordpress.com) of which Drs Suthren Hirst and Zavos are two of the main editors.
