Abstract

Cladding systems, on steel-framed buildings, may have a significant effect on the global behavior of the building, particularly under horizontal load. However, cladding is rarely included in the analytical
models used for the design of such structures. This paper examines different ways cladding could be included
in such models. Validated finite element models of four clad structures, three of which were previously tested
and one much larger multi-bay frame, were generated and analyzed using the different methods. It was found
that the simplified methods were able to estimate the deflection of the smaller structures but were inaccurate
for the larger multi-bay structure. The failure modes of the cladding could not be predicted by the simplified
methods. For all structures most of the horizontal load (applied at the eaves level) was resisted by the cladding
showing that the deflections and forces used in the design of clad steel structures are largely fictious.
