Abstract
The first edition was published in 1975 and was foundational as the speciality of neonatal medicine was being born. The six editions that followed have retained the founding principles of gathering “relevant information about anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, bacteriology and genetics and coupling it with best available approach to caring for particular conditions.” They have kept pace with scientific and clinical advances across these disciplines, embraced emerging disciplines and new technologies, and adapted to the changing profiles of diseases of the newborn. For these reasons each edition has been recognised as the authoritative text of the time, and each has achieved high sales.
We are delighted that Wolters Kluwer has decided to publish an 8th edition. The time is right because of the explosion of knowledge about the fetus and newborn, rapid advances in perinatal science and medicine, recognition that the structure of our services impacts the outcomes of our patients, and increasing awareness that the needs of patients and healthcare workers in low and middle income countries have been under-served in the stable of medical texts.
Features of the 8th edition include:
• Content will be oriented to an international audience. Where appropriate authors will be encouraged to describe variations in the pathophysiology of disease, differential responses to treatments, and major differences in management, regulatory systems and service structures that exist in different settings.
• A strong emphasis on pathophysiology will be retained.
• There are 55 chapters; 10 completely new and 14 are substantial revisions.
• It will available as hard copy and e-book.
• Authors will be able to specify e-book content only.
• An efficient search and book-marking system in the electronic version will enable readers to create virtual chapters that pull together all content using a single search term (e.g. very low birth weight).
