A 2-dimensional approach to qos provisioning in adversarial mobile ad hoc network environments

    Abstract

    In an untrustworthy mobile ad hoc network (MANET), secu- rity and quality of service (QoS) should be considered in an integrated manner. Supporting QoS without considering se- curity threats and their implications may not lead to an opti- mal QoS solution. However, applying too much security will almost certainly lead to a high level of resource consump- tion, which may deplete QoS. This paper attempts to ad- dress these two issues together by proposing a 2-Dimensional Adaptation ARChitecture (2-DAARC) for achieving QoS in MANETs containing blackhole attackers. The architecture supports two forms of adaptation: single-path adaptation (SPA) and multi-path adaptation (MPA). SPA uses adaptive bandwidth reservations along a single path; it is intended for supporting QoS when the threat-level in the network is low. MPA uses a duplicated, best-effort data packet delivery ser- vice along multiple paths; it is intended for supporting QoS when the threat-level is high. MPA employs a novel Priority- basedMulti-path Type Selection (PMTS) algorithm for path selection. 2-DAARC switches between SPA and MPA based on the underlying network conditions measured by packet delivery ratios at the destination nodes. The architecture is evaluated against the INSIGNIA QoS framework, which uses a single-path bandwidth adaptation approach. The simula- tion results show that 2-DAARC performs better in terms of packet delivery ratios and end-to-end delays in lightly loaded networks.
