Abstract
Existing wetting models of monotectic behaviour are found to not be in agreement with the available information on interfacial energies in monotectic systems. A new model to determine whether a regular or irregular morphology occurs is proposed, based on an existing model of eutectic growth. This new model accurately predicts the behaviour of five monotectic systems which are well characterised in terms of interfacial energies and thermodynamics of the reaction. It is also able to predict the observed structural change in the CuPbAl pseudobinary monotectic. Finally similarities between irregular monotectics and facetted/non-facetted eutectics are indicated. © 1983.
