    Abstract

Some mechanical aspects of the free expansion of a stainless steel stent are investigated by means of a Finite Element (FE) model. Using aspects of symmetry the model was reduced to a 30 degrees segment of half of the stent, having a positive effect on the needed CPU time. As we focused on the free expansion of the uniform, internally loaded stent, complex contact problems between the balloon, the stent and the artery were not investigated. Critical phases during expansion are discussed and values of elastic radial and longitudinal recoil are determined from the simulations.
