Abstract

T-cell receptor (TCR) recognition of the peptide–major histocompatibility complex (MHC) can lead to quantitatively and qualitatively different responses depending on the nature of the bound ligand. Subtly altered peptide ligands might act as partial agonists, antagonists or null ligands. Here, Graham Lord and colleagues propose a kinetic differentiation model to explain how altered TCR signalling can occur.
