Abstract
A reliable low mortality method of producing chronic intraperitoneal sepsis in rats is described. Polyester sponges were placed in the pelvis of 93 rats and injected with a standard inoculum of faecal organisms. Animals were sacrified from 1 to 10 weeks. Three rats died in the first week, but 90 remaining animasl all developed a localized collection of pus. Abscess contents from 18 rats contained 3-6 bacterial species per lesion with a mean (± s.e.m.) log10 count of viable organisms per ml of 6.84 ± 0.10 aerobes and 7.09 ± 0.13 anaerobes.
