Abstract
The next five years will see a substantial increase inthe number of all-electric (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles(HEVs) utilizing onboard electrochemical energy storagedevices (batteries) that require full or part recharging byconnection to a low voltage utility network that supplydomestic or light industrial users. The utility connectionrequires a battery charger composed of a uni- or bi-directionalpower electronic converter that converts the AC supply to DCor vice versa. The expectation for future automotive powerelectronic converter products is lifetimes of 10 years and over, and operation in arduous temperature environments, factorsthat compromise existing power converter topologies, inparticular those employing electrolytic capacitors. This paperdiscusses a 7kW battery charger design that is modular, has abalanced three-phase input, is near unity power factor and hasno electrolytic capacitors. The paper discusses the chargerdesign concepts and presents test validation results.
