Abstract

Flavi Ludus is an award-winning Latin poem by Luigi Galante (1877–1926), magna laus at the Certamen Hoeufftianum in Amsterdam in 1918. It has hardly been studied properly, though it brings together many of the themes which Véronique Dasen’s has pursued during her scholarly career: agency of the educator (the schoolteacher), children preferring play over work at school, and a child prodigy who fancies the beauty of nature and art. This article will bring together philological analysis with socio-cultural history of antiquity and intellectual history / history of ideas of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Italy.
