    Abstract

The heptadentate ligand 2POAP (I) combines two bridging alkoxide oxygen donors with diazine and pyridine terminal nitrogen donors in a linear array with the binding sites positioned critically to accommodate three metal centers, but on reaction with Mn(ClO4)2·6H2O a strict self assembly process occurs, producing a unique homoleptic nonamanganese 'square' grid complex, involving six ligands. The crystal structure of [Mn9(2POAP-2H)6](ClO4)6·3.57MeCN·11H2O was detd. Electrochem. studies show that the complex undergoes a 4 electron oxidn. process followed by four more addnl. 1 electron oxidn. steps. Variable temp. magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange as well as a very weak ferromagnetic interaction at
