    Abstract

A new stable open-box shaped pentamer of vertically linked porphyrins, is formed quant. by treatment of tetra-4-pyridylporphyrin (TPyP) with [Ru(TPP)CO(EtOH)], (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin) to give (TPyP)[Ru(TPP)CO]4 1. (Trans-DPyDP)[Ru(TPP)CO]2 2, (cis-DPyDP)[Ru(TPP)CO]2 3 and [Ru(TPP)(CO)(MPyTP)] 4, were similarly synthesized (trans-DPyDP = 5,15-di-4-pyridyl-10,20-diphenylporphyrin, cis-DPyDP = 5,10-di-4-pyridyl-15,20-diphenylporphyrin, MPyTP = 5,(4-pyridyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin). The Zn derivs. Zn1, Zn3 and Zn4 were synthesized by treatment of 1,3 and 4 with zinc acetate. Zn1 adds S-bonded RuII-Me2SO complexes which can enter the box to form adducts contg. the rare bridging Me2SO. [on SciFinder(R)]
