A re-examination of the epidemiological data for Cumbrian coastal areas

Abstract

The Black Report confirmed the existence of high rates of leukaemia in the young people of Millom Rural District, to the south of the Sellafield site on the West Cumbrian coast. We have examined the available epidemiological data for the area and find significant heterogeneity in the distribution of cases, the childhood lymphoma-leukaemia cases being effectively confined to the village of Seascale. No explanation is readily available for the isolation of this excess. We suggest that programmes of statistical analyses and measurements of radionuclides in human tissues should clarify the situation in Seascale, and other areas of interest.
