    Abstract

Forty patients with endoscopically-confirmed reflux oesophagitis were treated with the antacid-alginate preparation Algicon® in an open study for six weeks. One week of placebo treatment was given before active treatment and subsequent symptom assessments compared with those at the end of the placebo period. Highly significant improvements in patients symptom scores and investigator rating occurred on active treatment. Endoscopic appearances also improved. Algicon was well tolerated with few minor side-effects.
