Adsorption dynamics of toluene in structured fixed bed with ZSM-5 membrane/PSSF composites

    Abstract

    ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobil) membrane/PSSF (paper-like sintered stainless steel fibers) composites were fabricated by the wet layup papermaking/sintering technique and secondary growth process. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) respectively. Adsorption dynamics of toluene in structured fixed bed filled with both granular activated carbons (GAC) with bed height of 2.4 cm in the inlet of bed and ZSM-5/PSSF composites with bed height of 0.6 cm in the outlet of bed was investigated. Both Yoon-Nelson and Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) models were used to analyze the experimental results. Both two mathematical models were found to show a good agreement with the experimental results. The dynamic parameters such as rate constant (k′), 50% breakthrough time (τ), adsorption capacity (N0) as well as the adsorption rate constant (ka) were determined. The rate constant (k′) values determined using Yoon-Nelson model were 0.026 and 0.064 min−1 for the individual GAC fixed bed and structured fixe bed, respectively. On the other hand, the adsorption capacity (N0) values calculated using BDST model were 158.3 and 101.7 g/L for the individual GAC fixed bed and structured fixe bed, respectively. The length of unused bed (LUB) theory was also used to analyze the experimental results. The LUB was obviously decreased by adding ZSM-5/PSSF composites in the outlet of structured fixed bed. The structured fixed bed offers the value of LUB of 0.51 cm was smaller than that of individual GAC fixed bed (0.81 cm). This suggests that the mass transfer of structured fixed bed was obviously enhanced by adding ZSM-5/PSSF composites in the outlet of structured fixed bed.
