Abstract
The government's strategic policy stance concerning air quality management identifies an enhanced role of actors and agencies at the local scale. The various methods and mechanisms needed for this to be carried out are examined, including the tools and resources that are required. A number of case studies are then given to illustrate the recent application of air quality management philosophy by local authorities in the UK in an effort to tackle air quality problems at the local level. In conclusion, this evidence from UK test cases is brought together and an assessment made of the success of these schemes to date. Finally, suggestions are made for future policy directions and the further development of air quality management in the UK.
