Abstract

Is geography tied to empire? How is empire tied to mapping? How is mapping tied to knowledge? And how do metaphors of spatiality inform epistemology? Refreshing Edward Said’s ideas on imagined geographies, this book section (conceptualized as a ‘convergence’) brings together three scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds to explore the construction and deployment of the geographical designation in the study of Asia. The authors engage in a dialogue addressing these questions, followed by three individual essays and a pedagogy forum that provides teaching resources and assignment suggestions.
