Abstract

In this work an algorithm for the simulation of 3D crack propagation finite element models is presented in detail. This algorithm can be adopted mainly for planar three-dimensional crack fronts, even if it can be applied also to non planar cases if a special mesh is created for the model. The crack front changes automatically its profile during propagation in relation to the geometry of the structure and the applied loads. If special strategies are used, accurate solutions can be achieved also for quite coarse meshes. Thanks to its simplicity, the algorithm can be implemented in a short time in a software that can be interfaced easily with the existing FEA environment.
