An appropriate environment for sofware construction

    Abstract

As an integral part of defining the specifications for the Eurotra machine translation (MT) kernel software, a large amount of implementation work was carried out in a rapid prototyping environment. This paper concentrates on the various software tools that were used, or developed, during the specification phase and demonstrates how, by utilizing existing generic software tools, an environment for the generation of MT systems was specified and a prototype implemented. This generation environment was at the time a novel idea in MT-system design. Its main advantages are flexibility, rapidity of production of MT system instances, modifiability and an overall well-defined formal status.
