An ideal for living

Abstract

It was June 1951 and our parents, Neville (Nev) and Doreen had just moved into brand new social housing in Priors Park – having braved a Dickensian existence in a small High Street alley since 1948. With years of post-war rationing still to run and severe economic austerity, widespread, the relocation must have seemed a dream come true at the time – though in truth (in housing ladder terms at least) owed much more to the arrival, just beforehand, of the couple’s second child.
