Abstract
Building on a basic understanding of generic research design, this chapter focuses on a subset of methods and tools that have been developed to study human performance issues that can affect space safety. Some methods are used to develop and test the efficacy of procedures and safety nets such as task and process analysis and digital human modeling. Other research tools provide a controlled research environment in which human performance questions may be answered, e.g., bed rest conditions and space mission analog environments. Finally, one tool (voice stress analysis) may be used to assess human states in research or as a tool for monitoring human states in real time
