    Abstract

    The films formed between stearic acid and the mesogen 5-CT are reanalyzed by optical second harmonic generation. The refractive index of the pure films are used to deduce molecular polarizabilities. At low and high fractions of 5-CT, a consistent interpretation of the second-harmonic generation is obtained using a mean molecular response. At intermediate fractions, the treatment can interpret the second-harmonic generation only by requiring molecular tilt.
