    Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of fitness for service (FFS) assessment procedures to evaluate the structural integrity of components containing flaws. The failure assessment diagram (FAD) approach is described with clear guidance provided regarding the input parameters required and the procedures to be followed that enable engineering judgements to be made regarding the proximity of a component to failure by plastic collapse or by fracture. Particular reference is made regarding the assessment of corrosion defects. Worked examples are provided to illustrate the practical application of the FAD approach. © 2010
