Abstract
This report, commissioned by DG Competition, examines policy responses to the banking crisis from the perspectives of competition policy and financial regulation. It considers the two contrasting views about competition in banking - that it enhances stability, or reduces stability. The authors reject the notion that the crisis should have led to a suspension of competition policy, although the competition assessment in banking will differ in important respects from other sectors.
